Alle ore 8.15 di questa mattina, lasciata la Nunziatura Apostolica, il Santo Padre Benedetto XVI si trasferisce in auto panoramica allo "Stade de l’Amitié", dove, alle ore 9, celebra la Santa Messa in occasione della pubblicazione dell’Esortazione Apostolica post-sinodale Africae munus della II Assemblea Speciale per l’Africa del Sinodo dei Vescovi.Concelebrano con il Papa oltre duecento Vescovi da tutta l’Africa e un migliaio di sacerdoti del Benin. Sono presenti fedeli da tutta la Nazione, e gruppi di pellegrini anche dalla Nigeria, dal Togo, dal Ghana e dal Burkina Faso. Assiste al sacro rito il Presidente della Repubblica con altre personalità istituzionali.
La Santa Messa della solennità di Gesù Cristo Re dell’universo è introdotta dal saluto di S.E. Mons. Antoine Ganyé, Arcivescovo Metropolita di Cotonou e Presidente della Conferenza Episcopale del Benin.
Dopo la proclamazione del Santo Vangelo, il Papa pronuncia l’omelia che riportiamo di seguito:
OMELIA DEL SANTO PADRE
Chers frères dans l’Épiscopat et le sacerdoce,
Chers frères et sœurs,
À la suite de mon bienheureux prédécesseur le Pape Jean-Paul II, c’est une grande joie pour moi de visiter pour la deuxième fois ce cher continent africain, en venant chez vous, au Bénin, et de vous adresser un message d’espérance et de paix. Je voudrais tout d’abord remercier très cordialement Monseigneur Antoine Ganyé, Archevêque de Cotonou, pour ses paroles de bienvenue et saluer les Évêques du Bénin, ainsi que tous les Cardinaux et les Évêques venus de nombreux pays d’Afrique et d’autres continents. Et à vous tous, frères et sœurs bien-aimés, venus participer à cette messe célébrée par le Successeur de Pierre, j’adresse mes salutations les plus chaleureuses. Je pense certes aux béninois, mais aussi aux fidèles des pays francophones voisins, le Togo, le Burkina Faso, le Niger et d’autres. Notre célébration eucharistique en cette solennité du Christ Roi de l’univers, est l’occasion de rendre grâce à Dieu pour le cent cinquantième anniversaire des débuts de l’évangélisation du Bénin ainsi que pour la deuxième Assemblée spéciale pour l’Afrique du Synode des Évêques qui s’est tenue à Rome il y a quelques mois.
L’évangile que nous venons d’entendre, nous dit que Jésus, le Fils de l’homme, le juge final de nos vies, a voulu prendre le visage de ceux qui ont faim et soif, des étrangers, de ceux qui sont nus, malades ou prisonniers, finalement de toutes les personnes qui souffrent ou sont mises de côté ; le comportement que nous avons à leur égard sera donc considéré comme le comportement que nous avons à l’égard de Jésus lui-même. Ne voyons pas là une simple formule littéraire, une simple image ! Toute l’existence de Jésus en est une illustration. Lui, le Fils de Dieu, est devenu homme, il a partagé notre existence, jusque dans les détails les plus concrets, se faisant le serviteur du plus petit de ses frères. Lui qui n’avait pas où reposer sa tête, sera condamné à mourir sur une croix. Tel est le Roi que nous célébrons !
Sans doute cela peut nous paraître déconcertant ! Aujourd’hui encore, comme il y a 2000 ans, habitués à voir les signes de la royauté dans la réussite, la puissance, l’argent ou le pouvoir, nous avons du mal à accepter un tel roi, un roi qui se fait le serviteur des plus petits, des plus humbles, un roi dont le trône est une croix. Et pourtant, nous disent les Écritures, c’est ainsi que se manifeste la gloire du Christ ; c’est dans l’humilité de son existence terrestre qu’il trouve son pouvoir de juger le monde. Pour lui, régner c’est servir ! Et ce qu’il nous demande, c’est de le suivre sur ce chemin, de servir, d’être attentifs au cri du pauvre, du faible, du marginalisé. Le baptisé sait que sa décision de suivre le Christ peut l’amener à de grands sacrifices, parfois même à celui de sa vie. Mais, comme nous l’a rappelé saint Paul, le Christ a vaincu la mort et il nous entraîne à sa suite dans sa résurrection. Il nous introduit dans un monde nouveau, un monde de liberté et de bonheur. Aujourd’hui encore, tant de liens avec le monde ancien, tant de peurs nous tiennent prisonniers et nous empêchent de vivre libres et heureux. Laissons le Christ nous libérer de ce monde ancien ! Notre foi en lui qui est vainqueur de toutes nos peurs, de toutes nos misères, nous donne accès à un monde nouveau, un monde où la justice et la vérité ne sont pas une parodie, un monde de liberté intérieure et de paix avec nous-mêmes, avec les autres et avec Dieu. Tel est le don que Dieu nous a fait dans notre baptême !
‘Venez, les bénis de mon Père, recevez en héritage le Royaume préparé pour vous depuis la création du monde’ (Mt 25, 34). Accueillons cette parole de bénédiction que le Fils de l’homme adressera, au jour du Jugement, à ceux et à celles qui auront reconnu sa présence parmi les plus humbles de ses frères, dans un cœur libre et rempli de l’amour du Seigneur ! Frères et Sœurs, ce passage de l’Évangile est vraiment une parole d’espérance, parce que le Roi de l’univers s’est fait tout proche de nous, serviteur des plus petits et des plus humbles. Et je voudrais m’adresser avec affection à toutes les personnes qui souffrent, aux malades, à celles qui sont touchées par le sida ou par d’autres maladies, à tous les oubliés de la société. Gardez courage ! Le Pape vous est proche par la prière et la pensée. Gardez courage ! Jésus a voulu s’identifier au petit, au malade ; il a voulu partager votre souffrance et reconnaître en vous des frères et des sœurs, pour les libérer de tout mal, de toute souffrance ! Chaque malade, chaque pauvre mérite notre respect et notre amour car à travers lui Dieu nous indique le chemin vers le ciel.
Et ce matin, je vous invite encore à vous réjouir avec moi. En effet, voici 150 ans que la croix du Christ a été implantée sur votre terre, que l’Évangile y a été annoncé pour la première fois. En ce jour, rendons grâce à Dieu pour l’œuvre accomplie par les missionnaires, par les « ouvriers apostoliques » originaires de chez vous ou venus d’ailleurs, évêques, prêtres, religieux, religieuses, catéchistes, tous ceux qui, hier comme aujourd’hui, ont permis l’extension de la foi en Jésus-Christ sur le continent africain ! Je salue ici la mémoire du vénéré Cardinal Bernardin Gantin, exemple de foi et de sagesse pour le Bénin et pour le continent africain tout entier !
Chers frères et sœurs, tous ceux qui ont reçu ce don merveilleux de la foi, ce don de la rencontre avec le Seigneur ressuscité, ressentent aussi le besoin de l’annoncer aux autres. L’Église existe pour annoncer cette Bonne Nouvelle ! Et ce devoir est toujours urgent ! Après 150 ans, nombreux sont ceux qui n’ont pas encore entendu le message de salut du Christ ! Nombreux sont aussi ceux qui sont réticents à ouvrir leurs cœurs à la Parole de Dieu ! Nombreux sont ceux dont la foi est faible, et dont la mentalité, les habitudes, la façon de vivre ignorent la réalité de l’Évangile, pensant que la recherche d’un bonheur égoïste, du gain facile ou du pouvoir, est le but ultime de la vie humaine. Avec enthousiasme, soyez des témoins ardents de la foi que vous avez reçue ! Faites resplendir en tous lieux le visage aimant du Sauveur, en particulier devant les jeunes, en recherche de raisons de vivre et d’espérer dans un monde difficile !
L’Église au Bénin a beaucoup reçu des missionnaires : elle doit à son tour porter ce message d’espérance aux peuples qui ne connaissent pas ou qui ne connaissent plus le Seigneur Jésus. Chers frères et sœurs, je vous invite à avoir ce souci de l’évangélisation, dans votre pays et parmi les peuples de votre continent et du monde entier. Le récent Synode des Évêques pour l’Afrique le rappelle avec insistance : homme d’espérance, le chrétien ne peut se désintéresser de ses frères et de ses sœurs. Ce serait en pleine contradiction avec le comportement de Jésus. Le chrétien est un bâtisseur inlassable de communion, de paix et de solidarité, ces dons que Jésus lui-même nous a faits. En y étant fidèles, nous collaborons à la réalisation du plan de salut de Dieu pour l’humanité.
Chers frères et sœurs, je vous engage donc à affermir votre foi en Jésus Christ, en opérant une authentique conversion à sa personne. Lui seul nous donne la vie véritable et peut nous libérer de toutes nos peurs et lenteurs, de toutes nos angoisses. Retrouvez les racines de votre existence dans le baptême que vous avez reçu et qui fait de vous des enfants de Dieu ! Que le Christ Jésus vous donne à tous la force de vivre en chrétiens et de chercher à transmettre généreusement aux générations nouvelles ce que vous avez reçu de vos Pères dans la foi ! On this feast day, we rejoice together in the reign of Christ the King over the whole world. He is the one who removes all that hinders reconciliation, justice and peace. We are reminded that true royalty does not consist in a show of power, but in the humility of service; not in the oppression of the weak, but in the ability to protect them and to lead them to life in abundance (cf. Jn 10:10). Christ reigns from the Cross and, with his arms open wide, he embraces all the peoples of the world and draws them into unity. Through the Cross, he breaks down the walls of division, he reconciles us with each other and with the Father. We pray today for the people of Africa, that all may be able to live in justice, peace and the joy of the Kingdom of God (cf. Rom 14:17). With these sentiments I affectionately greet all the English-speaking faithful who have come from Ghana and Nigeria and neighbouring countries. May God bless all of you!
[En ce jour de fête, nous nous réjouissons du règne du Christ-Roi sur la terre entière. C’est lui qui délie tout ce qui entrave la réconciliation, la justice et la paix. Nous nous rappelons que la vraie royauté ne consiste pas dans une démonstration de puissance, mais dans l’humilité du service, ni non plus dans l’oppression des faibles, mais dans la capacité de les protéger pour les conduire à la vie en abondance (cf. Jn 10, 10). Le Christ règne par la Croix et, avec ses bras ouverts, il embrasse tous les peuples de la terre et les attire à l’unité. Par la Croix, il abat les murs de la division, il nous réconcilie les uns avec les autres et avec le Père. Nous prions aujourd’hui pour les peuples d’Afrique, afin que tous puissent vivre dans la justice, la paix et la joie du Règne de Dieu (cf. Rm 14, 17). C’est avec ces sentiments que je salue affectueusement tous les fidèles anglophones venus du Ghana et du Nigéria, et des pays limitrophes. Que Dieu vous bénisse !]
Queridos irmãos e irmãs da África lusófona que me ouvis, a todos dirijo a minha saudação e convido a renovar a vossa decisão de pertencer a Cristo e de servir o seu Reino de reconciliação, de justiça e de paz. O seu Reino pode ser posto em perigo no nosso coração. Aqui Deus cruza-se com a nossa liberdade. Nós – e só nós – podemos impedi-Lo de reinar sobre nós mesmos e, em consequência, tornar difícil a sua realeza sobre a família, a sociedade e a história. Por causa de Cristo, tantos homens e mulheres se opuseram, vitoriosamente, às tentações do mundo para viver fielmente a sua fé, às vezes mesmo até ao martírio. A seu exemplo, amados pastores e fiéis, sede sal e luz de Cristo na terra africana! Amen.

Son Règne peut être mis en péril dans notre cœur. Là, Dieu se rencontre avec notre liberté. Nous - et seulement nous - pouvons l’empêcher de régner sur nous-mêmes et, par conséquent, rendre difficile sa seigneurie sur la famille, la société et l’histoire. À cause du Christ, de nombreux hommes et femmes, se sont opposés victorieusement aux tentations du monde pour vivre fidèlement leur foi, parfois jusqu’au martyre. Sulla scia del mio beato Predecessore, il Papa Giovanni Paolo II, è per me una grande gioia visitare per la seconda volta questo caro Continente africano, venendo tra voi, in Benin, e rivolgervi un messaggio di speranza e di pace. Desidero anzitutto ringraziare molto cordialmente Monsignor Antoine Ganyé, Arcivescovo di Cotonou, per le sue parole di benvenuto e salutare i Vescovi del Benin, come pure tutti i Cardinali e i Vescovi giunti da numerosi Paesi dell’Africa e di altri continenti. E a voi tutti, amati fratelli e sorelle, venuti per partecipare a questa Messa celebrata dal Successore di Pietro, rivolgo il mio più caloroso saluto. Penso certo agli abitanti del Benin, ma anche ai fedeli dei Paesi francofoni vicini, il Togo, il Burkina Faso, il Niger ed altri. La nostra celebrazione eucaristica in questa solennità di Nostro Signore Gesù Cristo Re dell’universo è l’occasione per rendere grazie a Dio per il 150° anniversario degli inizi dell’evangelizzazione del Benin, come pure per la Seconda Assemblea Speciale per l’Africa del Sinodo dei Vescovi, tenutasi a Roma vari mesi fa.
Il Vangelo che abbiamo appena ascoltato ci dice che Gesù, il Figlio dell’uomo, il giudice ultimo delle nostre vite, ha voluto prendere il volto di quanti hanno fame e sete, degli stranieri, di quanti sono nudi, malati o prigionieri, insomma di tutte le persone che soffrono o sono messe da parte; il comportamento che noi abbiamo nei loro confronti sarà dunque considerato come il comportamento che abbiamo nei confronti di Gesù stesso. Non vediamo in questo una semplice formula letteraria, una semplice immagine! Tutta l’esistenza di Gesù ne è una dimostrazione. Lui, il Figlio di Dio, è diventato uomo, ha condiviso la nostra esistenza, sino nei dettagli più concreti, facendosi il servo del più piccolo dei suoi fratelli. Lui che non aveva dove posare il capo, sarà condannato a morire su una croce. Questo è il Re che celebriamo!
Indubbiamente questo ci può sembrare sconcertante! Ancor oggi, come 2000 anni fa, abituati a vedere i segni della regalità nel successo, nella potenza, nel denaro o nel potere, facciamo fatica ad accettare un simile re, un re che si fa servo dei più piccoli, dei più umili, un re il cui trono è una croce. E tuttavia, ci dicono le Scritture, è così che si manifesta la gloria di Cristo: è nell’umiltà della sua esistenza terrena che Egli trova il potere di giudicare il mondo. Per Lui, regnare è servire! E ciò che ci chiede è di seguirlo su questa via, di servire, di essere attenti al grido del povero, del debole, dell’emarginato. Il battezzato sa che la sua decisione di seguire Cristo può condurlo a grandi sacrifici, talvolta persino a quello della vita. Ma, come ci ha ricordato san Paolo, Cristo ha vinto la morte e ci trascina dietro di Sé nella sua risurrezione. Ci introduce in un mondo nuovo, un mondo di libertà e di felicità. Ancora oggi tanti legami con il mondo vecchio, tante paure ci tengono prigionieri e ci impediscono di vivere liberi e lieti. Lasciamo che Cristo ci liberi da questo mondo vecchio! La nostra fede in Lui, che è vincitore di tutte le nostre paure, di ogni nostra miseria, ci fa entrare in un mondo nuovo, un mondo in cui la giustizia e la verità non sono una parodia, un mondo di libertà interiore e di pace con noi stessi, con gli altri e con Dio. Ecco il dono che Dio ci ha fatto nel Battesimo!
"Venite, benedetti del Padre mio, ricevete in eredità il regno preparato per voi fin dalla creazione del mondo" (Mt 25,34). Accogliamo questa parola di benedizione che il Figlio dell’uomo rivolgerà, nel giorno del Giudizio, agli uomini e alle donne che avranno riconosciuto la sua presenza fra i più umili dei loro fratelli, in un cuore libero e pieno dell’amore del Signore! Fratelli e sorelle, questo passo del Vangelo è veramente una parola di speranza, poiché il Re dell’universo s’è fatto vicinissimo a noi, servo dei più piccoli e dei più umili. E io vorrei rivolgermi con affetto a tutte le persone che soffrono, ai malati, a quanti sono colpiti dall’AIDS o da altre malattie, a tutti i dimenticati della società. Abbiate coraggio! Il Papa vi è vicino con la preghiera e con il ricordo. Abbiate coraggio! Gesù ha voluto identificarsi con i piccoli, con i malati; ha voluto condividere la vostra sofferenza e riconoscere in voi dei fratelli e delle sorelle, per liberarli da ogni male, da ogni sofferenza! Ogni malato, ogni povero merita il nostro rispetto e il nostro amore, perché attraverso di lui Dio ci indica la via verso il cielo.
E quest’oggi vi invito ancora a rallegrarvi con me. In effetti, sono 150 anni che la croce di Cristo è stata piantata sulla vostra terra, che il Vangelo è stato annunciato in essa per la prima volta. In questo giorno rendiamo grazie a Dio per l’opera compiuta dai missionari, dagli "operai apostolici" originari di casa vostra o venuti da altre parti, vescovi, sacerdoti, religiosi, religiose, catechisti, tutti coloro che, ieri come oggi, hanno permesso l’estendersi della fede in Gesù Cristo sul Continente africano! Saluto qui la memoria del venerato Cardinale Bernardin Gantin, esempio di fede e di sapienza per il Benin e per tutto il Continente africano!
Cari fratelli e sorelle, tutti coloro che hanno ricevuto il dono meraviglioso della fede, questo dono dell’incontro con il Signore risorto, sentono anche il bisogno di annunciarlo agli altri. La Chiesa esiste per annunciare questa Buona Novella! E tale compito è sempre urgente! Dopo 150 anni, molti sono coloro che non hanno ancora udito il messaggio della salvezza di Cristo! Molti sono anche quanti fanno resistenza ad aprire il proprio cuore alla Parola di Dio! Molti sono coloro la cui fede è debole, e la cui mentalità, le abitudini, il modo di vivere ignorano la realtà del Vangelo, pensando che la ricerca di un benessere egoista, del guadagno facile o del potere sia lo scopo ultimo della vita umana. Con entusiasmo siate testimoni ardenti della fede che avete ricevuto! Fate risplendere in ogni luogo il volto amorevole del Salvatore, in particolare davanti ai giovani alla ricerca di ragioni di vita e di speranza in un mondo difficile!
La Chiesa in Benin ha ricevuto molto dai missionari: essa deve a sua volta recare questo messaggio di speranza ai popoli che non conoscono o non conoscono più il Signore Gesù. Cari fratelli e sorelle, vi invito ad avere questa preoccupazione per l’evangelizzazione, nel vostro Paese e tra i popoli del vostro Continente e del mondo intero. Il recente Sinodo dei Vescovi per l’Africa lo ricorda insistentemente: uomo di speranza, il cristiano non si può disinteressare dei propri fratelli e sorelle. Questo sarebbe in aperta contraddizione con il comportamento di Gesù. Il cristiano è un costruttore instancabile di comunione, di pace e di solidarietà, doni che Gesù stesso ci ha fatto. Nell’esservi fedeli, noi collaboriamo alla realizzazione del piano di salvezza di Dio per l’umanità.
Cari fratelli e sorelle, vi invito perciò a rafforzare la vostra fede in Gesù Cristo, operando un’autentica conversione alla sua persona. Soltanto Lui ci dà la vera vita e ci può liberare da tutte le nostre paure e lentezze, da ogni nostra angoscia. Ritrovate le radici della vostra esistenza nel Battesimo che avete ricevuto e che fa di voi dei figli di Dio! Che Cristo Gesù dia a tutti voi la forza di vivere da cristiani e di cercare di trasmettere generosamente alle nuove generazioni ciò che avete ricevuto dai vostri Padri nella fede! In questo giorno di festa, ci rallegriamo insieme per il regno di Cristo Re su tutta la terra. E’ Lui che rimuove tutto ciò che ostacola la riconciliazione, la giustizia e la pace. Noi sappiamo che la vera regalità non consiste in una dimostrazione di potenza, ma nell’umiltà del servizio, non consiste nell’oppressione dei deboli, ma nella capacità di proteggerli e condurli alla vita in abbondanza (cfr Gv 10,10). Cristo regna dalla Croce e, con le sue braccia aperte, abbraccia tutti i popoli della terra e li attira verso l’unità. Mediante la Croce, abbatte i muri della divisione, ci riconcilia gli uni con gli altri e con il Padre. Preghiamo oggi per i popoli dell’Africa, affinché tutti possano essere capaci di vivere nella giustizia, nella pace e nella gioia del Regno di Dio (cfr Rm 14,17). Con questi sentimenti saluto affettuosamente tutti i fedeli di lingua inglese venuti dal Ghana, dalla Nigeria, e dai Paesi limitrofi. Dio vi benedica tutti!

Il suo Regno può esser messo in pericolo nel nostro cuore. Qui, Dio si incontra con la nostra libertà. Noi – e soltanto noi – possiamo impedirgli di regnare su noi stessi e, di conseguenza, rendere difficile la sua signoria sulla famiglia, sulla società e sulla storia. A causa di Cristo, numerosi uomini e donne si sono vittoriosamente opposti alle tentazioni del mondo per vivere fedelmente la propria fede, talvolta sino al martirio. Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Following in the footsteps of my blessed predecessor Pope John Paul II, it is a great joy for me to visit for the second time this dear continent of Africa, coming among you, in Benin, to address to you a message of hope and of peace. I would like first of all to express my cordial gratitude to Archbishop Antoine Ganyé Cotonou, for his words of welcome and to greet the Bishops of Benin, as well as the Cardinals and Bishops from various African countries and from other continents. To all of you, dear brothers and sisters, who have come to this Mass celebrated by the Successor of Peter, I offer my warm greetings. I am thinking certainly of the faithful of Benin, but also of those from other French-speaking countries, such as Togo, Burkina Faso, Niger and others. Our Eucharistic celebration on the Solemnity of Christ the King is an occasion to give thank to God for the one hundred and fifty years that have passed since the beginnings of the evangelization of Benin; it is also an occasion to express our gratitude to him for the Second Special Assembly of the Synod of African Bishops which was held in Rome a few months ago.
The Gospel which we have just heard tells us that Jesus, the Son of Man, the ultimate judge of our lives, wished to appear as one who hungers and thirsts, as a stranger, as one of those who are naked, sick or imprisoned, ultimately, of those who suffer or are outcast; how we treat them will be taken as the way we treat Jesus himself. We do not see here a simple literary device, or a simple metaphor. Jesus’s entire existence is an example of it. He, the Son of God, became man, he shared our existence, even down to the smallest details, he became the servant of the least of his brothers and sisters. He who had nowhere to lay his head, was condemned to death on a cross. This is the King we celebrate!
Without a doubt this can appear a little disconcerting to us. Today, like two thousand years ago, accustomed to seeing the signs of royalty in success, power, money and ability, we find it hard to accept such a king, a king who makes himself the servant of the little ones, of the most humble, a king whose throne is a cross. And yet, the Scriptures tell us, in this is the glory of Christ revealed; it is in the humility of his earthly existence that he finds his power to judge the world. For him, to reign is to serve! And what he asks of us is to follow him along the way, to serve, to be attentive to the cry of the poor, the weak, the outcast. The baptized know that the decision to follow Christ can entail great sacrifices, at times even the sacrifice of one’s life. However, as Saint Paul reminds us, Christ has overcome death and he brings us with him in his resurrection. He introduces us to a new world, a world of freedom and joy. Today, so much still binds us to the world of the past, so many fears hold us prisoners and prevent us from living in freedom and happiness. Let us allow Christ to free us from the world of the past! Our faith in him, which frees us from all our fears and miseries, gives us access to a new world, a world where justice and truth are not a byword, a world of interior freedom and of peace with ourselves, with our neighbours and with God. This is the gift God gave us at our baptism!
"Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world" (Mt 25:34). Let us receive this word of blessing which the Son of Man will, on the Day of Judgement, address to those who have recognized his presence in the lowliest of their brethren, with a heart free and full of the love of the Lord! Brothers and sisters, the words of the Gospel are truly words of hope, because the King of the universe has drawn near to us, the servant of the least and lowliest. Here I would like to greet with affection all those persons who are suffering, those who are sick, those affected by AIDS or by other illnesses, to all those forgotten by society. Have courage! The Pope is close to you in his thoughts and prayers. Have courage! Jesus wanted to identify himself with the poor, with the sick; he wanted to share your suffering and to see you as his brothers and sisters, to free you from every affliction, from all suffering. Every sick person, every poor person deserves our respect and our love because, through them, God shows us the way to heaven.
This morning, I invite you once again to rejoice with me. One hundred and fifty years ago the cross of Christ was raised in your country, and the Gospel was proclaimed for the first time. Today, we give thanks to God for the work accomplished by the missionaries, by the "apostolic workers" who first came from among you or from distant lands, bishops, priests, men and women religious, catechists, all those who, both yesterday and today, enabled the growth of the faith in Jesus Christ on the African continent. I honour here the memory of the venerable Cardinal Bernardin Gantin, an example of faith and of wisdom for Benin and for the entire African continent.
Dear brothers and sisters, everyone who has received this marvellous gift of faith, this gift of an encounter with the risen Lord, feels in turn the need to proclaim it to others. The Church exists to proclaim this Good News! And this duty is always urgent! After 150 years, many are those who have not heard the message of salvation in Christ! Many, too, are those who are hesitant to open their hearts to the word of God! Many are those whose faith is weak, whose way of thinking, habits and lifestyle do not know the reality of the Gospel, and who think that seeking selfish satisfaction, easy gain or power is the ultimate goal of human life. With enthusiasm, be ardent witnesses of the faith which you have received! Make the loving face of the Saviour shine in every place, in particular before the young, who search for reasons to live and hope in a difficult world!
The Church in Benin has received much from her missionaries: she must in turn carry this message of hope to people who do not know or who no longer know the Lord Jesus. Dear brothers and sisters, I ask you to be concerned for evangelization in your country, and among the peoples of your continent and the whole world. The recent Synod of Bishops for Africa stated this in no uncertain terms: the man of hope, the Christian, cannot be uninterested in his brothers and sisters. This would be completely opposed to the example of Jesus. The Christian is a tireless builder of communion, peace and solidarity - gifts which Jesus himself has given us. By being faithful to him, we will cooperate in the realization of God’s plan of salvation for humanity.
Dear brothers and sisters, I urge you, therefore, to strengthen your faith in Jesus Christ, to be authentically converted to him. He alone gives us the true life and can liberate us for all our fears and sluggishness, from all our anguish. Rediscover the roots of your existence in the baptism which you received and which makes you children of God! May Jesus Christ give you strength to live as Christians and to find ways to transmit generously to new generations what you have received from your fathers in faith! On this feast day, we rejoice together in the reign of Christ the King over the whole world. He is the one who removes all that hinders reconciliation, justice and peace. We are reminded that true royalty does not consist in a show of power, but in the humility of service; not in the oppression of the weak, but in the ability to protect them and to lead them to life in abundance (cf. Jn 10:10). Christ reigns from the Cross and, with his arms open wide, he embraces all the peoples of the world and draws them into unity. Through the Cross, he breaks down the walls of division, he reconciles us with each other and with the Father. We pray today for the people of Africa, that all may be able to live in justice, peace and the joy of the Kingdom of God (cf. Rom 14:17). With these sentiments I affectionately greet all the English-speaking faithful who have come from Ghana and Nigeria and neighbouring countries. May God bless all of you!

Dear brothers and sisters of the Portuguese-speaking nations of Africa who are listening to me! I greet all of you and I invite you to renew your decision to belong to Christ and to serve his Kingdom of reconciliation, justice and peace. His Kingdom can be threatened in our hearts. There God comes face to face with our freedom. We – and we alone – can prevent him from reigning over us and consequently obstructing his Lordship over our families, society and history. Because of Christ, many men and women successfully opposed the temptations of the world in order to live their faith truly, even to martyrdom. Dear pastors and faithful, following their example, be the salt and light of Christ, in the land of Africa! Amen.
