Dono offerto alla Nunziatura Apostolica. Nel campo della medaglia, a sinistra viene rappresentato l'albero del Baobab, simbolo del Mozambico, affiancato dalla data in latino del Viaggio Apostolico. A destra viene raffigurata la Palma del Viaggiatore, emblema nazionale del Madagascar e, accanto ad essa, il mare e una parte del sole, in riferimento all'Oceano Indiano che bagna tutti e tre i Paesi e al clima tropicale. Al centro risalta la Croce, circondata dai raggi, verso la quale vola un “Paille-en-queve”, il volatile simbolo nazionale di Maurizio. In basso al centro compare la dicitura in latino inerente al Viaggio Apostolico. Artista: Daniela Longo.
Interamente realizzato in mosaico con il tradizionale sistema di taglio manuale e incastonatura di ogni singola tessera colorata, questo pannello rappresenta lo stemma di Sua Santità Papa Francesco. Il blasone papale presenta in alto il simbolo della Compagnia di Gesù. Esso è composto da un sole raggiante e fiammeggiante, dentro al quale campeggia l’acronimo IHS, sormontato da una croce e con tre chiodi alla base. L’acronimo IHS si prestò alla lettura di Iesus Hominum Salvator (Gesù, Salvatore dell’Umanità), oppure In Hoc Signo (Vinces), di costantiniana memoria; mentre successivamente i Gesuiti lo interpretarono come Habemus Iesum Socium (Abbiamo Gesù come Compagno) e Societas Iesu humilis (Società umile di Gesù). Oltre al simbolo della Compagnia di Gesù, compaiono anche una stella, che secondo la tradizione araldica sta a simboleggiare la Vergine Maria, e il fiore di nardo, che nell’iconografia ispanica rimanda alla castità di san Giuseppe. Ponendo nel suo stemma questi simboli, Papa Francesco ha quindi voluto
esprimere non solo la propria particolare devozione al Santissimo Nome di Gesù e la sua appartenenza ai Gesuiti, ma anche la devozione verso Maria Vergine e a san Giuseppe, suo sposo. Un omaggio alla misericordia divina è invece il motto che accompagna lo stemma pontificio di Papa Francesco: Miserando atque eligendo. Esso è tratto dalle Omelie di San Beda il Venerabile, che commentando l’episodio evangelico della vocazione di San Matteo, scrisse: Vidit ergo Iesus publicanum et quia miserando atque eligendo vidit, ait illi Sequere me (Vide Gesù un pubblicano e siccome lo guardò con sentimento di amore e lo scelse, gli disse: Seguimi). Apostolic Nunciature GIFTS Cast of the Medallion. Gift offered to the Apostolic Nunciature. In the space on the left side of the medal there is an image of the Baobab, symbol of Mozambique, flanked by the date in Latin of the Apostolic Trip. On the right there is the Traveller’s Palm, national emblem of Madagascar, and next to it the sea and a part of the sun, referring to the Indian Ocean which bathes the shores of all three countries, and the tropical climate. In the centre there is the Cross, surrounded by rays; a “Paille-en-queve”, the bird that is the national symbol of Mauritius, flies towards it.At the bottom centre there is the Latin wording relating to the Apostolic Trip. Mosaic of the coat of arms of Pope Francis. Gift offered to the Apostolic Nunciature. Entirely produced in mosaic using the traditional system of the manual cutting and setting of each individual coloured tile, this panel depicts the coat of arms of His Holiness Pope Francis. At the top of the papal coat of arms is the symbol of the Society of Jesus. It is composed of a radiant and flaming sun, in which there is the acronym IHS, and above it, a cross with three nails at its base. The acronym IHS lends itself to interpretation as Iesus Hominum Salvator (Jesus, Saviour of Humanity), or In Hoc Signo (Vinces), of Constantinian memory; whereas subsequently the Jesuits interpreted it as Habemus Iesum Socium (We have Jesus as Companion) and Societas Iesu humilis (Humble Society of Jesus). Aside from the symbol of the Society of Jesus, there is also a star, which according to heraldic tradition symbolizes the Virgin Mary, and the spikenard flower, which in Hispanic iconography refers to the chastity of Saint Joseph. By selecting these symbols for his coat of arms, Pope Francis thus wished to express not only his particular devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus and his belonging to the Jesuits, but also his devotion to the Virgin Mary and to Saint Joseph, her spouse. The motto accompanying Pope Francis’ coat of arms – Miserando atque eligendo - instead pays homage to divine mercy. It is taken from the Homilies of Saint Bede the Venerable who, commenting on the Gospel episode of the vocation of Saint Matthew, wrote: Vidit ergo Iesus publicanum et quia miserando atque eligendo vidit, ait illi Sequere me (Jesus saw a tax collector and, as he looked at him with sentiment of love and chose him, He said to him, Follow me).
